An acquaintance I know through work has been periodically asking me questions about Jesus. Recently, the discussions have taken on a seriousness that led me to ask this gentleman a few questions of my own. Since some of our discussions have led to the subject of Hell and punishment, I was curious to know what he believed.
He has has told me that though he believes that God exists, that Jesus is God, that he himself is not a Christian. I asked in light of that, if he thought that he would go to heaven if he were to die.
He said that he believed not. This led to me sharing what Christ has done for him and for all of us. I used our imperfections, (his and mine) and how the Law of God reveals them in us to show him how without Jesus and the forgiveness He provides, we cannot enter into eternity with Him.
We talked about how it is necessary to turn from sin and turn toward God through His Son, in order to be truly alive and to live forever. He seemed to understand the truth of all these things, yet he made no choice or acknowledgement that he needs to do something about it.
My impression is that this man thinks that there is no immediate need to take action because he already has a sense that this current life is a "forever thing." I can only pray that he will change his mind and realize that it isn't. A sense of urgency about his eternal prospects wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen here.
