I made a 'pick up' today before church. I drove to a local mall and there loaded up 153-8' tables and hauled them back to the business where I work. I also picked up some warehouse dollies and some other items. It took two trips. All told today, because I lifted them once to put them on dollies, once to put them into the truck and trailer and once to take them out again and put them into the storage shed, I lifted about 23,000 lbs in about 2 1/2 hours. I'm 48 years old, and I'm beginning to wonder how long I can continue to do these sorts of things. I am lucky it is my day off, or I would have had another 7 hours in front of me still. I've done that sort of thing a lot too. It wouldn't be a big deal, except that right now I have a broken bone in my left foot.
For that reason I was kind of dreading how things might go. My concern was unfounded, thankfully, due to a brand new pair of cross-training shoes that my loving wife procured for me through eBay. It really helps to be properly shod for the journey. I can imagine how my foot might have felt later, if I'd been wearing the worn out pair that I just discarded yesterday. It was just 24 degrees when I got there at 7 a.m. to start loading, and I was also glad I had dressed warmly, as a cold breeze came up and started to make it feel much colder. It helps to be equipped for the work we have to do.
It's even more important to be equipped for the spiritual work that God has prepared for us to do.
Eph 2:9-10 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.NKJV
Believers have works to do, and they were prepared for us beforehand, by the Almighty Himself, to serve His purposes, His will. I don't know about you, but if there is some task, whatever it might be, and it was prepared ahead of time for me to do, by the all knowing, all seeing Creator of all things, (including me) the Most High God, I want to be equipped and prepared to do the work at hand. You might ask, "But if the work is spiritual, where do you find that equipment?"
2 Tim 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. NKJV
For doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness, complete and thoroughly equipped. His word is profitable for all of these things, and for many other things too. Remember, that quote is just about works. That's where we find the equipment we need. The little book we have in our laps on Sunday mornings. Hopefully, what our pastor/teacher tells us each Sunday, or whatever day of the week we are able to fellowship, will only wet our appetites for good equipment, and we will be spending time on our own, in the Word of God.
James 2:17-18 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.NKJV
The Bible also tells us that we are saved through grace, through faith:
Eph 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.NKJV
Hmm, so we are His workmanship, he saved us by His grace alone through faith, not by our own works. We have no bragging rights. Works don't play any part in saving us, but works actively go hand in hand with our faith. A natural outgrowth of our faith in Him should be the fact that we work for Him. After all, He created works ahead of time for us to do, that we are supposed to do, and His word can equip us thoroughly to actually do those works. Just the three little verses I've posted here tell us a lot, and help to equip us too. Is there more treasure to be mined from these verses? Sure. Imagine how well we get equipped when we read the whole of God's Word.
