I love old movies. I enjoy some films that are being made today, but I think that old movies have it all over most contemporary releases. When the subject comes up between my friends and I, they usually look at me like I just stepped off of the last train from Fogeyville, and then politely dismiss the idea. That's okay too. We all have different reasons for liking or disliking movies.
One reason I like older movies, especially those from the 1930s, '40s and early '50s, is that most of them did not rely on special effects to carry the story, because the best movies were character driven. There were less movies being churned out then, and there was no television, and the writing catered to a broader audience which, especially during the era just prior to and during the second World War, shared a unique perspective for the future.
The writing to me seemed more uplifting and intelligent. There was violence in older films, but it wasn't so graphically depicted. There certainly was far less profanity, and nudity in mass market films was almost unheard of, which I'm sure some will to censorship. I'm glad for the censorship of that era, because it often forced less talented writers and directors out of the way. It takes more skill to bring about the mood or message of a scene without the use of profanity and nudity and graphic violence.
I think the writers and directors of older films were better educated than many of the filmmakers working today, especially in the areas of history and classic literature, as evidenced perhaps by the fact that they made so many historical films based on classic literature. These were great stories, that people could learn from. Quite unlike many of the films that are made today, which teach you how not to get arrested or killed while committing felony crimes.
I object to a lot of newer movies that they are so filled with so much objectionable material, and even if it is edited, it is still pretty obvious what is being said or done, to the point which, it might as well not even be edited. I object because Jesus lives in me now, and I don't want Him seeing and hearing those things, not through my eyes and ears.
Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. Romans 6:13 KJV

Have you ever watched The Truman Show? I would be interested in hearing your opinion of it if you have.
Shield
I've seen The Truman Show and it was a welcome surprise in the category of originality. I actually enjoyed it and thought it was very well done.
I ususally don't like something this satirical but this movie was pretty inventive. The idea of 'media' controlling a human life being taken this far actually worked for me. Though it was offbeat, it says a lot about free will, and about our nature as humans, demanding the right to make choices. The only complaint I have about that movie is that I thought it could have gone longer.
I thought it illustrated eloquently the angst of a world view paradigm shift from start to finish.
