It's pretty interesting now that "The Da Vinci Code" is about to be released in mid May, that some people are ready to believe that this work of fiction is based on truth, and just as ready to say that The Bible is a work of fiction. I've met a few. This isn't anything new. I read a suspense novel about fifteen years ago, whose author used some of the same type of historical events that Da Vinci's author, Dan Brown used, and that guy cooked up a very similar type of storyline.
Unfortunately, what Dan Brown presents as history has to be looked at very carefully. What he says, and what is true historically for example, about the Gospels, emperor Constantine, Leonardo Da Vinci, Mary Magdalene, gnosticism and gnostics themselves, and many other things, are very different. What he says isn't hard to refute however, if you wish to take the time to look stuff up.
Mr. Brown, just like the author of the other book I once read, reinvents history to make a story for entertainment. I've only read excerpts from the Da Vinci Code at this point, and I can see that it's more complex than the similar novel that I read years ago, but that doesn't really matter. Take this novel and subsequent film for what they are. They are simply entertainment for the masses, but more importantly, they may create opportunities to share the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. You don't need to read the book if you don't want to, and you don't need to see the movie. Just know your Bible, and be ready to be used by God when the opportunity might present itself.
