Most of what is available to watch on T.V. anymore is simply dead time, a waste. There are some worthwhile programs. One of the broadcasts that comes around once every four years is of course, the Winter Olympics. The opening cerimony is on tonight. This year they will be broadcast delayed from Torino Italy, but I don't mind the delay, as long as some co-worker or newscaster doesn't spoil my fun by telling me the outcome before I can watch it.
Practically everybody in my family goes nuts over the Super Bowl, which in my mind is almost always a very one sided game, and really boring, as there is typically six hours of broadcast with very little actual play time. I don't feel I get more for my money with the Olympic coverage because, hey, they're both free. However, I do feel there is something to be said for, ( and feel free to jump all over me) the Olympic ideal. I know that since the amateur athlete only status has passed away, something supposedly pure was lost from the competiton, but I still think there is value in nations coming together to compete athletically. It won't solve any of the world's real problems, and it won't change most peoples lives in any significant way. But it's a much better thing to spend money on than much of the money our country spends on a great deal of other things that achieve a lot less. At least, the Olympics are fun to watch, and so far, no wardrobe malfunctions.
