The Go-To Gal
I would ask how Oprah Winfrey suddenly became the go-to woman for spiritual guidance for so many, but I already know how it happened. It didn't happen very suddenly though. She has been creeping along at this pace for many years. She has only started to seriously assert her beliefs in more recent years. It has been a long time coming.
I have never cared for her show, not even back when what she was doing were shows about how circus sideshow people were looking for acceptance or whatever sensational thing she was doing that week to knock Phil Donahue out of their hot ratings race. Not that I miss Phil even a little bit. I recall about a dozen years ago a co-worker was a little upset with me because he touted some things she mentioned on her show. I think it was new age gobbledygook even back then. I told him that she shouldn't be peddling it, and that she was wrong for doing it. He became a little indignant and said, "I still think she's a quality person though." That's it isn't it? People like her because she appears to be a nice person. That's fine, but it's also totally irrelevant to whether or not what she is pushing on her show is total garbage.
"The Secret" is her big deal now and she's devoted whole episodes to it on her show. I first became aware of it when I heard some sound bites of her and some of her guests on a couple of different Christian radio programs. One of those shows went into great detail and played quite a bit of her show. You don't need much though, to see that this isn't anything but the same old new age, secular humanistic mish-mash, rearranged a bit, and with a new tag to make it a bit more marketable.
This is old stuff. When I say "old," I mean Garden of Eden old. Like the lie-mixed truth that Satan deceived Eve with, Oprah is deceiving women on a much grander scale. Only estimates can be made as to how many households are receiving her show, and just who is watching it, but it's a sure bet that the majority of the viewers are marginalized women, disenchanted with part or all of their present lifestyle, who are looking for answers. Any answers.
I make my own destiny. I'm the master of my life's ship. It's all about me and what I decree for my life. Same old junk. This has been man's problem from the beginning. The pride of life and wanting to be in control of ourselves, instead of acknowledging God in all of our ways is where the trouble all started. The book that Oprah loves has plenty of fans. It's a best-selling book and has become so popular that it's been made into a movie.
So what is in Australian author Rhonda Byrne's book? What's it about? What's the big deal? I haven't read it, and I don't need to, because she detailed the whole thing and gave up "the Secret" on Oprah's show. Let me save you a few bucks. The "Secret" is this----- you can have whatever you want if you believe it and want it badly enough, because what goes around comes around. If you know this secret, you can use "divine" universal principles to "attract" what you want to yourself. Hey! You can create your life, just like----- God?
This is the new age, secular humanist version of the health and prosperity gospel. That's right, if you get sick, you've invited that upon yourself too. Back in the 1970's they were calling this Transcendentalism. I guess what goes around does come around.

Name it and claim it. I despise the twisted idea that we as "Christians" inherantly have the power to will God into obedience. A member of my family recently refused to see the doctor untill she needed to go the hospital because she refused to admit that she was sick. Hello! - you are puking in a pan on the floor, to say that you are perfectly healthy and feel great is a lie from the pit. By admitting that something in your life isn't perfect, you are not claiming that for your future; you are simply stating a fact. I choose to accept my circumstances as simple fact, claim the promises of Christ and not rely on my own power or understanding.
Michael,
The concept is unbiblical to say the least, and the fact is, it has been around for about as long as sin. Man's will, or God's. Those are the choices. I'm glad that you have chosen to rely upon Him and no other.
Thanks for your comments.
Peace in His name,
David
