I have no doubt, now that North Korea has a nuclear bomb that it's neighbors, especially South Korea, will want to have a "nuclear deterrent" too. The tide of public opinion on whether or not your country should have nukes changes fairly fast when one's egomaniacal neighbor, who makes no bones about threatening others all the time has them.
The U.S. and the rest of the world have very few options here. You can choose the diplomatic route, which may include sanctions, or we can take military action. Military actions would be disastrous. I think Kim Jong-il would use whatever weapons he has at hand, and they are considerable even if a lot of them are old. South Korea no doubt would suffer heavily. The resulting casualties immediately could be more than half a million lives lost.
Unfortunately, we have all seen that diplomatic sanctions have had little affect on North Korea's nuclear footpath. There have even been a few sanctions put into place since the test took place. North Korea's answer? Sanctions will only mean war.
So what do you do? I for one do not wish to see any more children blown to pieces in a raspberry contest between the world's leaders. What if North Korea actually uses a nuclear weapon? Kim Jong-il is just another prince in rebellion against God. That's a signal for us to pray. We should be praying for calm in that region, and that the reality of what a war with North Korea would mean for the world be given to people's hearts, especially that of Kim Jong-il. We should pray for our president, and ask God to strengthen him in the face of such serious decisions, giving him the wisdom to make the decisions which best serve to glorify God.
