Customer traffic has been steady but not outstanding over the last few weeks. Most likely because of the 100 plus degree temperatures we've been experiencing until a few days ago. Can't blame people for not wanting to rent equipment from us so that they can work outdoors. They have however been having weddings and parties and so we've been renting lots of dishes and grills and tables and chairs.

With an extra person on the job and less equipment going out and returning, it is easier to get caught up with the regular service and the guys will end up standing around. That's one of the places on the job where I come in. We all get paid to work and when somebody is standing around they aren't being productive and they certainly aren't earning their keep by using their talents, and it's my job to keep them busy and productivity high.

I understand that they don't always see the work that needs doing, but sometimes it's also a case of selective eyesight. They can be standing right on top of something that needs doing and not see it. A simple word or two to them and whatever it is comes right to their attention. I ended up doing that today with two of the guys when I walked into the workshop because one of them was supposed to have reported to me and instead was spending time talking with the other. I simply told him that in the last half hour of the day that he still had three tasks he should be able to get accomplished before he went home and he got right on it.

Before anyone thinks I might be trying to come off as a bit superior here, I've realized that I've done the same sort of thing in my spiritual life that my fellow employees have done on the job. I do work for the Lord and then I get a little tired and sometimes I sort of stand around and "rest," when I should be working.

It doesn't take a lot of mentioning from the Lord either, to make me realize I'm not seeing what it is I should be doing. A mention of something in the Sunday morning announcements or bulletin. A friend asking for help. Reading a passage in Scripture that suddenly makes a "light" go on. All it takes is for me to be paying the slightest attention and there is always something to do, and I have no doubt, none, that the Lord has certain things that I should be able to accomplish before I go "home."

8 God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT

I appreciate this post. :) As an employee, my attitude is to learn what needs to be done and then to do it without ever having to be told. In my view, my manager should never have to remind me to do something that is my responsibility or that clearly needs to be done.

One way I accomplish this is to schedule on my calendar regular attention to various projects. For example, every Thursday I spray weeds around the lot. Every Monday and Thursday I do a safety and fluid check on the forklift. Each Friday I clean the restrooms. Every day I pick up litter around the property. Every Monday and Thursday I prepare a list for items that need to be transferred from the main store to ours. And so on. Obviously some of these items may require more frequent attention which I readily do.

Again I never want my manager to worry about whether I am doing my job. He should NEVER have to ask me to do something that is a regular part of my task list, or that I should be able to perceive as a need myself.

It's called being responsible and it leads to being indispensible as an employee.

Blessings,
