In Galatians 1, verses 7 through 9, Paul warns the believers in the Galatian church, and us, about those who want to trouble us and "pervert the gospel of Christ;"
7.....but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. "

To today's champions of tolerance, I guess that passage probably sounds harsh, but that probably means that they just don't realize what's at stake, the way Paul did. Paul knew that while the Gospel is the power of God to save souls for eternity, that its truth could be compromised in the minds of men and women, and that they could be led away from the grace of God.His warnings have been justified since he gave them, time and again. The Gnostics of Paul's day tried constantly to destroy the foundation of each and every church Paul helped to plant, and there have been no shortage of perverse doctrines since.

There are many cults which just can't seem to garner members without using Jesus' matchless name to draw them in.There is even one large cult, estimated these days to be about 12 to 14,000,000 members strong, that claims to be Christian because it has Jesus' name in incorporated into its church title. Well if that's all it took to be a Christian church, I guess it's a wonder that Jesus bothered to go to the Cross. Yet, while teaching blasphemies such as multiple Gods, a non-virgin birth, marriage to multiple wives by Jesus and personally attainable godhood, this cult continues to gain membership.

Paul warns prophetically again in 2 Timothy 4: 3 and 4, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Tim. 4:3-4).

The ememy's latest assault on the truth of the Gospel in the present day should be easily recognizable to any believer who knows their Bible. The trouble is, one of the two most current attacks come to us in the form of entertainment. The DaVinci Code novel and movie burst onto the culture scene and have already started getting people to question the truth of the Gospel of the Bible. I've talked to individuals who've had questions about the stuff they've read in the DaVinci code, and I've talked to one individual who goes around now spouting author Dan Brown's fictional machinations as fact.

Dan Brown's book in its fictional form denies the deity of Jesus, marries him off to Mary of Magdala and gives her god-like recognition. Brown's wildly inaccurate treatment of things historical, such as what occurred at the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. and who was there are fairly easy with time and effort to compare to fact.

As a society who loves conspiracy, people who aren't acquainted with Jesus personally are going to be enthralled with this movie when it comes out. Face it, stuff couched like this in the form of a thriller are entertaining. That's the point, and unfortunately along with the entertainment a lot of false information slides in and makes its way into one's thought life. At present, I don't intend to see this movie. Why would I want this junk in my head?

The other assault currently under way on people today come in the form of supposed archaeological and Biblical scholarship backing a non-canonical Coptic document now titled, "The Gospel of Judas."A writer for National Geographic named Bart Ehrman sees it this way: “…What will make this gospel famous—or infamous, perhaps—is that it portrays Judas quite differently from anything we previously knew. Here he is not the evil, corrupt, devil-inspired follower of Jesus who betrayed his master; he is instead Jesus' closest intimate and friend, the one who understood Jesus better than anyone else, who turned Jesus over to the authorities because Jesus wanted him to do so. This gospel has a completely different understanding of God, the world, Christ, salvation, human existence—not to mention of Judas himself—than came to be embodied in the Christian creeds and canon. It will open up new vistas for understanding Jesus and the religious movement he founded"

This contempt for God and His truth should be readily recognizable to anyone who reads and knows his Bible. That's the key. Read and know your Bible and you will be able to recognize all counterfeits. Another reason to read and know your Bible is to be ready and able to help the person who has seen The DaVinci Code, or read about the Gospel of Judas, and has questions. The person with questions may be a serious opportunity for adding a heart and life to the Kingdom of God.
