I was watching a movie today on television. It wasn't long before I was hearing a fair amount of profanity. The more profane stuff was edited by the use of "bleeping." This is done in such a way now though so as to leave the listener in no doubt about which word is being used, as usually only the center of the word gets taken out. So why bother?

If you watch a movie on television that's been edited for content, it doesn't mean that much anymore. The most profane uses of language are still left in, especially on cable. Network television is bad enough in what is allowed by the censors now, but cable is something else again.

Time and time again I heard the Lord's name being openly profaned while words of obscenity were either openly used or poorly edited. I think this kind of contempt for decency is an "in your face" to censorship by the people who do the editing of the programs aired. The bare minimum of compliance is used to eek by whatever requirements there are, to get the show aired as close to its original content as is possible. This is usually done for reasons of supposed "artistic integrity."

One has to wonder why with so little attempt at civility or consideration for those whom might find this language offensive, the editor/s put so much effort into retaining integrity of any kind.
