Had an interesting experience last night. Our church has been experiencing growing pains. This is a very good thing. We have been steadily gaining new converts to Christ, and seeing some older Christians join the body as well. What this means in practical terms, is that we need a bigger building. It's not a good thing just because we're a bigger church now, but it's a good thing that we have become a bigger church because people need Jesus, and they are finding Him.
As a consequence of this, we are now combining our three Sunday morning services into one service that we will have at a local convention facility we are renting each Sunday, until construction is completed on our new property. This means that we will be loading up a huge number of items each week and hauling them from our church to the convention center every Sunday and then loading it all up and returning it to the church.
Our head usher, a great guy, held a meeting the other night to detail all of the items we will need. Two pages worth. He obviously, with a number of other people, including our head of children's ministry, a wonderfully dedicated woman, expended a generous amount of time and effort to organize and bring this transition about.
Last night, we loaded up all of the necessary equipment, including everything from tables and chairs and bulletins to toys and bandages and antiseptic, into a really nice 18' enclosed trailer, generously donated by one of our members. Packed it pretty full.
When I left the house to go and help, my wife looked at the list of items and jokingly said, "See you tomorrow."
Well, the whole process took less than an hour. The majority of the guys who were at the meeting were able to show up, and everybody pitched in and helped. We all had a great time doing it.
For me, it was an example the Biblical description of the body in action. Our Head, gave leading in response to prayer, and directed us to the facility, and through a blessed individual, provided us with the means to transport the necessary items. The hands and feet went to work and today carried out the physical side of the work. There wasn't a single ruffled feather in the whole endeavor, and it went without a single hitch.
This is how it should be.
Rom 12:4-5 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. NKJV
