Great Proofs of Truth
I listened to a Bible study the other evening in which the overall theme was proving the Bible's accuracy. Bible apologetics is a favorite subject of mine. The gentleman teaching was using prophecies concerning the present nation of Israel to prove his points.
There is so much information from which to draw upon regarding fulfilled prophecy. Many Bibles will contain sections devoted to prophecies, listing often, those which are directly related to the ones fulfilled by Jesus and His appearing. There are so many though, that you can go from one Bible to another to find different lists. Take Matthew and Luke's genealogy lists for example. At first glance, some people when debating the accuracy of the Bible, point to those passages as being contradictory. In actuality, they are a wonderful fulfillment of Bible prophecy that attest to the accuracy of the Scriptures.
Luke show's us Jesus' ancestral line through Mary. He was physically born of Mary, and that shows us His humanity. Matthew's list shows us the Savior's legal line through His stepfather, Joseph. It was because Joseph was Jesus' adopted father that He was legally entitled as heir, to sit on the throne, the curse of Coniah having been bypassed in this way. (See Jeremiah 22:24-30) Both Joseph and Jesus were legally descended from David, and at the same time, Jesus was physically descended from David through Mary.
One day, Jesus will return to reign on the Davidic throne in the Millennium. If He had only come through the line of Joseph, and therefore by Jeconiah, He would have been disqualified to sit on the throne. But as Jesus told John the Baptist, "....it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Only in this Bible, these Scriptures, can all things be explained because they are so intricately woven together by the very hand of God in His masterful plan for history. We need to study it and trust it, and never be afraid of showing its truth. Challenges may come from those who would try to diminish its importance, but our attitude should always be one of, "Let me show you the truth about what you are contesting." Saying, "Is that the best you've got, to come against the Bible? What? That's it?" may be fun and gratifying, but I really doubt that it will win anyone over to God's Word.
